It was not begrudgingly given, but a sign of his goodness. The purpose of sex is to express and deepen the unity between two people. #2 The Bible states that God is for sex. It also states that sex is for marriage. We are not designed for multiple sexual relationships, and as a result, they become less relational, more functional, and less satisfying. #3 Jesus explains that the reason we have marriage is because of our sexual difference. We are not just human beings, but men and women. And this has been the case since the beginning. #4 The one-flesh union is intended to be the way in which Adam and Eve fulfill God’s command to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth (Genesis 1 v 28, ESV). From this union flows the possibility of new life, which is reflected in the Old Testament book of Malachi.
