When we label someone, others start to see them through the lens of that label. When we use the term autism, some people have an accurate understanding of the word, but many others do not. #2 The diagnosis of autism can sometimes help you predict a child’s behaviors, but it tells you nothing about their specific way of thinking, their idiosyncrasies, their strengths, or their individual personality. To understand and help a child, you must consider how their brain systems function and how they process information. #3 When it comes to autism, people often over-emphasize the child’s traits, which are innate, inborn reactions to stress, novelty, and people. They may also under-emphasize the child’s temporary states, which are moods, reactions, and mindsets. #4 When it comes to disclosure of a person’s disability, experts agree that it should be done only when it will help someone understand them better. If you do want to disclose a person’s disability, it should be done within a full depiction of them.
