It was a cloudless day on Alaska’s North Slope. The temperature was a balmy 21 degrees F and a mild breeze blew out of the northwest. A hundred yards from the hut, four scientists toiled over a small drilling rig. A member of the team—a Russian by the name of Dmitry Petkov—was busy preparing samples for later study. Petkov paused, then fell awkwardly to the ground.
The three remaining team members rushed to the aid of their stricken colleague. When they arrived by his side, Petkov was coughing up blood.
The team rushed Petkov to the hut. Szendiuch powered up the radio equipment and transmitted a distress call on the Alaskan State Emergency Channel at 5167.5 kHz, while Biddenworth and Humphreys attended to Petkov.
Petkov died five hours later. Twenty-four hours after that, Petkov’s entire team succumbed to the strange infection. The clinic records indicated the Russian and his colleagues exhibited symptoms consistent with both pneumonia and severe bacterial meningitis. Within a weeks’ time, nearly a third of the Nuiqsut village residents had fallen ill; many died. Then, as mysteriously as it started, the outbreak was over.
Details of the event were suppressed, but the military did not forget. U.S. Army personnel arrived within forty-eight hours. Wearing protective hazmat suits, they collected samples from both the town and the drilling site. The material was transported to an Army medical research center in Ft. Detrick, Maryland. The records, along with extensive test results and medical autopsies conducted on several corpses, formed the basis of a highly-classified Pentagon report.
