Sia has no registration stamp, no license to breathe, and a touch that causes the state's rigid geometry to dissolve back into primitive, lawless basalt. To keep her from unspooling into gray smoke, Vane commits the ultimate bureaucratic crime: he anchors her to reality using his own tissue. But in a world that is systematically forgetting its own streets, the arithmetic of survival is brutal. Every mile they run costs Vane his own skin, forcing his lungs to harden into municipal limestone and his ribs to lock into a five-foot granite milestone just to store her weight.
