The Book of Enoch, also known as 1 Enoch, is an ancient Jewish religious work ascribed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. It expands on the mysterious verses in Genesis that mention the Nephilim — the offspring of the 'sons of God' and the 'daughters of men.'
The first section, known as the Book of the Watchers, recounts how a group of angels, the Watchers, descended to Earth, took human wives, and fathered giants. These giants, the Nephilim, caused great violence and destruction. The angels taught forbidden knowledge to humans, corrupting creation. The consequences were cosmic: divine judgment, the Great Flood, and the imprisonment of the fallen angels.
This text was cherished in early Judaism and by some early Christians but was excluded from most biblical canons. Yet its influence endures—in theology, mysticism, and literature—as a voice from the ancient world calling us to wisdom, humility, and awe.
