The Breach

Revi Chatterjee-Oswin is a security engineer at Cortrant Financial, a fintech company headquartered in Austin. On an ordinary Thursday afternoon in September, a routine security scan flags something that should not exist: an eleven-month-old unauthorized data connection running from a production database to a server in Frankfurt, exfiltrating data every 47 minutes. The connection is sophisticated, encrypted, and designed to evade detection. It has survived multiple audits, external pentests, and Revi's own previous security reviews. Which means someone inside Cortrant built it. And someone inside Cortrant has kept it hidden. Revi knows that until she understands who, she cannot trust anyone: not her team lead, not her CISO, not the company's outside counsel.
