What are Chloe's parents up to? Emmeline, her mother, has gone away again without saying goodbye. Tom, her father, is always off to the Middle East. Then a posh housekeeper appears and installs military discipline. Chloe will have to step up her eavesdropping. All she knows is that something is badly wrong.
Centre stage is the village of Eastlyme on Dorset's Jurassic Coast: this is the story of Chloe Belford, her secretive parents, and Muriel Mizen, manager of Cliff Towers Hotel, Eastlyme's monstrous close to the Fossil Beach. Professor Emmeline Belford has sent her daughter to do work experience in the hotel during the summer holidays. Muriel has taken on an energetic night porter to help her ease the burden during peak season. Everything should be all right, shouldn't it?
But these events happen soon after the Novichok incident, and MI5 has been made aware of a murderous incident. Illegal aliens are known to be embedded in the region and are likely to reappear at any time.
This is the story of Eastlyme's villagers, their ambitions, their follies and their pratfalls. It's only because spies and spycatchers happened upon the village that this has become a cross-genre novel – real life in all its constant complexities.
Prepare for occasional laughs as the ladies of the village do their best to make Eastlyme the sort of village you would want to live in. (They're not very good at it.)
