THE COMPOSED HUSBAND
What Indian Men Cannot Say and What Marriage Cannot Survive
He is a good man. He provides. He does not shout, he does not drink, he does not stray.
And you cannot remember the last time you knew what he was feeling.
For more than three decades, Dr G. B. Singh has sat across from such men in a consulting room in Delhi. Men who manage every responsibility in their lives except one — their own inner life. Men who were taught, early and thoroughly, that a man does not say what he feels. He carries it.
This book is about what that costs.
It is about the husband who is present at every dinner and absent from every conversation. The father whose children have learned not to ask. The wife who stopped expecting to be met, and cannot say when she stopped. The households where everyone is accounted for and no one is truly known — where nothing is wrong, exactly, and nothing is alive either.
Through a series of intimate clinical portraits, The Composed Husband traces how composure becomes a prison: how a marriage can be full of duty and empty of intimacy without anyone once raising their voice, and how the silence a man inherited from his own father is quietly handed on to his son.
This is not a book of techniques. It offers something rarer, and more useful: recognition. It gives a name to what has been happening in your home — patiently, in plain language — until at last you can see it.
If you have ever sat beside a man you love and felt entirely alone, this book was written for you.
And if you are that man — if you have spent your life being reliable, being steady, being fine — it was written for you too.
