The Temporal Conduct Authority—guardians of time, space, and bureaucratic irritation—are closing in. They don't believe in Tom's "death is a doorway" theory, and they're determined to send him back to where he belongs: properly dead.

Meanwhile, his old ally the Magus is battling a bizarre Docu-virus that causes uncontrollable hair growth, the Skagans are fighting a losing battle against a ruthless intergalactic tax system, and reality itself seems to be unravelling at the edges.

As timelines collide and chaos escalates, Tom must outwit assassins, out-manage lunatics, and somehow stay alive long enough to die again.
