The Indigenous Army, Volume I: An Operational Atlas of the Campaigns of Saint-Domingue, 1791–1804

Between 1791 and 1804, an army assembled from the enslaved population of a single Caribbean colony achieved what no other such force had done before or has done since. It defeated the planter militias of the wealthiest colony on earth, repelled an expeditionary force of Spain, broke a five-year British expeditionary campaign, and ultimately shattered the largest amphibious expedition Napoleon Bonaparte ever sent across the Atlantic. The result was the only successful slave revolution in recorded history—and the establishment of the second independent state in the Americas, a nation that renamed itself Haiti.

The strategic consequences were global. It traces the war's full arc: from the coordinated rising of 1791 and the destruction of the northern plain, through the five-year campaign that consumed a British army, the civil War of Knives, the conquest of the eastern colony, the descent of the Leclerc expedition and the stand at Crête-à-Pierrot, the epidemiological collapse that reignited the war, and the decisive assault at Vertières that ended European rule.

It is the first work to reconstruct these campaigns as campaigns—with orders of battle, terrain analysis, the maritime and disease environments that decided the war's outcome, and the full apparatus a soldier would require to study it. And it refuses to flinch: the internal bloodletting, the coerced labor that sustained the revolutionary state, and the massacres of 1804 are held inside the military analysis rather than quarantined from it, because they belong to the war's passage from liberation to the founding of a state that conceived its own independence as a permanent state of siege.
