In Auschwitz, where a name can disappear with the stroke of a pencil, sixteen-year-old Lenka Weissová learns to hide truth inside damaged books.

Beneath bunks, she preserves fragments of Andersen, Grimm and the Firebird. Their margins become a secret language of folds, threads, soot and spirals used to warn, guide and remember. Tomasz Górski, a quiet courier, helps build the system, while young Mirela Bienstock begins changing it.

Then the marks appear where they should not.

Children copy them. Routes change. Familiar handwriting is forged. Prisoners vanish after trusting messages they believed were safe. Jakub Hesse, working within the camp's records system, understands what Lenka is beginning to fear: whoever controls the record can control what others believe happened.

What began as resistance becomes a battle over evidence.

A spiral can save a life or send a child into danger. A name in the wrong ledger can become an accusation. A story repeated often enough can begin to resemble proof. Lenka and the children therefore create something more difficult than a secret code: a record that admits uncertainty. They separate witness from rumour, preserve mistakes beside corrections, and record even Lenka's own failures.

When Auschwitz collapses, the archive is scattered. Tomasz disappears into the evacuation. Jakub's fate remains uncertain. The surviving record is incomplete.

Fifty years later, Prague archivist Marek Domański receives an anonymous box containing a battered Andersen volume, fragments of cloth, photographs, names and mysterious spiral marks.

His search leads him to Helena Meissner—once Lenka Weissová—who remembers what the archive cannot prove.

As Marek follows documents, survivor testimony and missing evidence, he faces Lenka's old temptation: turning fragments into one convincing story. A forged mark may contain authentic history. A reliable witness may remember incorrectly. An official record may be precise and false.

The Spiral Archive is a historical psychological novel about resistance, memory, love and the dangerous human hunger for certainty. Moving between Auschwitz and Prague, it asks who owns the past—and whether preserving history sometimes means refusing to complete it.

If the dead cannot correct the stories told about them, what do the living owe to the gaps they left behind?
