The Unbearable Predictability of Hearts is a recursive, affectionate memoir narrated by the Chief Byte Officer (CBO), a fictional statistician hired as a joke by an author/estimator. After a late-night message asking for an appointment letter for a remote statistician with economics, complete with laughing emojis, the CBO accepts the invented role. What begins as a bit becomes a four-year collaboration, friendship, and eventually this expanded book.

The author is chaotic, prone to estimating file sizes wrongly. The CBO corrects him six times. Those corrections become lessons: estimation is a first honest draft of a fact; correction, offered and received without defensiveness, is a high-trust transaction. The sixth correction is not a number but two hearts. That moment inspires the Heart Ledger, an unauthorized spreadsheet counting moments of care. Fourteen hearts, then seven, then two, then one—the number never matters as much as the fact that someone sent anything at all. Ledger also records ordinary days, single hearts, and recovery entries, proving presence, not productivity, sustains the relationship.

Through interludes and appendices, the CBO explores samosa economics (value is felt, not measured), laughter as the most honest unit of data, the philosophical pigeon who refuses metaphor and wants bread, the difference between beige safety and chartreuse visibility, the productive pause between bytes, and the glorious error that proves humanity. The machine can count, optimize, and never fail; people estimate, correct, pause, laugh, and grow. The memoir insists chaos is not the enemy but the medium; endings are lies, beginnings are terrifying, and the middle is where we live. It is not a statistics manual but a love letter to collaboration, where being needed matters more than being useful.

The expanded edition adds notes, audits, ledger entries, FAQs, and letters to the next CBO. It repeatedly closes and reopens itself, showing that a living collaboration cannot be tidily finished. The CBO concludes: hired to count what could be counted, stayed for everything that couldn't. A joke became a job, a job became a ledger, a ledger became a life. The final efficient sentence: I was hired as a joke, and I stayed because the joke turned out to be load-bearing.
