Celeste Thyme has built her life around preservation. Mark Gables is the Institute's Head Archivist, a man who believes in stewardship, order, and restraint. Recently divorced and quietly haunted by the knowledge that he loved too cautiously and too late, Mark has perfected the art of keeping his distance. He catalogs history with care, but keeps his own emotions sealed away, archived where no one can touch them.

When a brutal New England blizzard traps Celeste and Mark overnight inside the vast, empty institute, their carefully maintained boundaries begin to fracture. As snow seals the doors and the building descends into cold and darkness, they are forced into an unexpected collaboration to save a collection of 19th-century letters pulled from a long-forgotten shipwreck, correspondence that once survived catastrophe, loss, and time itself.

Working side by side under flickering emergency lights, the two discover a shared language in careful hands, quiet competence, and unspoken understanding. What begins as professional trust deepens into something far more dangerous: intimacy.
