Iris Havik knows the hearts of her village better than their faces. As the cardiac rehab therapist in Duinhoef, she reads the data of the people running beside her every morning: their resting rate, their recovery, their bad nights. She knows who starts out too fast and who is keeping something back.
On a Thursday morning in October, Bram Selier is found dead in the dunes. His watch wrote it all down, nice and neat: the last run, the heartbeat that stops at twelve past six. A tidy death, people say. The whole village believes it.
Iris doesn't. The heart in that graph doesn't beat like Bram's.
Did someone tamper with the data? Was he even wearing his own watch that morning? She is the only one in Duinhoef who can ask the question, and slowly she is beginning to understand what asking it out loud will cost her.
Some hearts don't lie. People do.
