We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident: America at 250—and the Democracy Still Becoming, invites us to remember the whole story. It honors the Indigenous nations who lived and governed here long before the United States existed, including the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, whose example of unity among distinct nations helped shape the political imagination of the founders. It also acknowledges the millions of Africans brought here in chains, whose labor helped build the country and whose courage, resistance, creativity, and leadership continually expanded the meaning of freedom.
And it asks a simple question:
What kind of declaration does our time now require?
In 1776, independence was the necessary word. In 2026, perhaps the necessary word is interdependence. We are interdependent with one another and with the rivers, forests, oceans, soil, climate, animals, and living systems that make life possible. No community can flourish while others are abandoned. No freedom can endure without responsibility. No future can be built upon forgetting.
