"A Little Maid of Old Philadelphia" by Alice Turner Curtis is a historical novel set in 1778 during the American Revolutionary War. The story follows Ruth Pernell, a young girl living in Philadelphia, a city occupied by British forces under General Howe. Ruth's father is with Washington's army at Valley Forge, and she is a fervent supporter of the American cause. The narrative begins with Ruth's distress over her missing dog, Hero, whom she fears has been taken by British soldiers. Despite her Aunt Deborah's reassurances, Ruth is determined to find Hero. Her adventurous spirit leads her to disguise herself in her mother's best dress and visit General Howe to plead for her dog's return. This bold act results in a surprising encounter with Major Andre, a British officer, who escorts her home and promises to help find Hero. Ruth's actions highlight her courage and determination, even as she faces the consequences of her impulsive behavior. The story also explores themes of friendship and loyalty, as seen in Ruth's relationship with her friend Winifred Merrill and her brother Gilbert. Gilbert, inspired by the heroism of the Marquis de Lafayette, writes a play in which Ruth is invited to participate. The novel captures the spirit of the time, illustrating the challenges and resilience of those living in occupied Philadelphia. Through Ruth's eyes, readers experience the complexities of war, the importance of family, and the power of friendship.
