"The Camp Fire Girls in the Mountains" by Jane L. Stewart follows the adventures of the Manasquan Camp Fire group, led by their Guardian, Miss Eleanor Mercer. The story begins with the girls preparing for a friendly contest with a nearby troop of Boy Scouts, aiming to prove their self-reliance and skills in the wilderness. The narrative quickly shifts to a more serious tone as Bessie King and her friend Dolly Ransom become entangled in a dangerous situation involving a gypsy named John, who attempts to kidnap them under the influence of a mysterious Mr. Holmes.
