"The Motor Boys in the Clouds" by Clarence Young is an adventurous tale featuring the trio of Jerry Hopkins, Ned Slade, and Bob Baker, known as the Motor Boys. The story begins with the boys learning about an upcoming aero carnival in Broadlands, which piques their interest in airships. Their curiosity is further fueled by the news that their rival, Noddy Nixon, plans to participate with his own invention, the "Firefly," a peculiar machine designed to fly using flapping tin wings. Despite skepticism about its ability to fly, Noddy is determined to prove his invention's worth. The boys decide to attend the carnival, hoping to witness the spectacle and perhaps gain inspiration for their own aerial endeavors. Upon arrival, they explore the carnival grounds, encountering various inventors and their experimental flying machines. Among these is a contraption modeled after a grasshopper, highlighting the diverse approaches to flight during this era of experimentation. Noddy's attempt to demonstrate the "Firefly" ends in disaster. The machine, unable to achieve flight, careens into a lemonade stand, causing chaos and destruction. This incident not only embarrasses Noddy but also results in a financial dispute with the stand owner, who demands compensation for the damages.
